1)    Sensory Programme (Adult)

•    Sensory Drop In

    When? Friday 1 – 2pm or 2 – 3pm

    Where? Burton Stone Community Centre

    Cost? £3 per session (1st session free)

The sensory drop-in is a unique session that has been developed for adults with profound and multiple disabilities/ complex needs. These sessions provide a unique opportunity to make music using a range of accessible technology and sensory resources – meaning that all young people can play an equal part in the music making, whatever their individual needs and abilities.

As opposed to a traditional workshop setting, the Drop-In has a much more flexible structure, allowing the participants and their support worker an opportunity to work together to explore the environment, and find activities they both enjoy. The session offers a range of stimuli including:

o    Singing and signing
o    A range of sensory (touch, feel, smell, see) and non-technical music making
o    MIDIcreator (by pressing a switch you hear a sound)
o    Soundbeam (by moving in front of the beam you play music and trigger images)
o    Apollo Ensemble (transforms body movements into sound, light, image & video)
o    G Force (by making a sound into the microphone you change pictures)
o    Vibroacoustic Soundbox/ beanbag (by sitting/ lying on the box or beanbag you feel the vibrations of the music through your body)

•    Sensory Movement

    When? Tuesday 10.30 – 12pm

    Where? Burton Stone Community Centre

    Cost? £3 per session (1st session free)

The sessions have been designed specifically to enable those with high support needs to explore their movements and express themselves creatively, whilst at the same time being fun and energetic to do.

The sessions have been structured so that they can be accessed on a multi-sensory level, using dance and play to engage participation on both a one to one and group basis. A wide range of sensory resources and musical genres are used and wherever possible the group members’ musical interests are incorporated so that everyone can take part with their support worker in their own way. Time is also spent during sessions on relaxation and massage.

•    Creative Sensory

    When? Wednesday 10 – 11am

    Where? Burton Stone Community Centre

    Cost? £3 per session (1st session free)

The Creative Sensory sessions provide customers with an opportunity to explore a range of different creative art forms including painting, collage and mosaic work. All activities are designed specifically for those with disabilities, using colours, shapes, textiles and tactile fabrics that can be appreciated on a multi-sensory level. During the sessions the group members will create a range of creative works personal to themselves.

2)    Sensory Projects (Youth)

•    Music Makers

    When? Monday 1.15 – 2.45pm

    Where? The Melbourne Centre

    Cost? £3 per session (1st session free)

    Music Makers is a new music project designed specifically for young adults or young     people in transition with a range of learning difficulties, and disabilities (MLD/SLD). Sessions will be structured in a way that suits the needs of the young people attending.   The primary aim of the sessions will be to engage the young people through a range of musical activities, including accessible music technology, singing & signing, percussion and rhythm, dancing and movement, as well as more sensory activities for those with more complex needs.

3)    Creative Disability Projects

•    Occasional Painters Art Group

    When? Wednesday 1.15 – 2.45pm

    Where? Burton Stone Community Centre

    Cost? £3 per session (1st session free)

The ‘Occasional Painters’ Art group is aimed primarily at adults with moderate learning difficulties and disabilities. They explore a number of different themes by using a wide range of materials including fabrics, collage, painting, weaving and mixed media and they regularly contribute to citywide projects. This has including making squares for York quilt museum’s ‘Patch Project’ and making large structures for the ‘Fiesta’ festival in York. The Occasional Painters also regularly looks to famous artists for inspiration and once a term the group hosts an open day where they exhibit their own work, and invite family and friends to come and view it.

1) Sensory / PMLD Projects

· Sensory Drop In

The Sensory Drop In is a ground-breaking programme designed specifically for adults with profound and multiple disabilites (PMLD) who used to attend New Bridge. It provides an opportunity for participants to explore a wide range of musical and multi-sensory activities alongside their support worker.

Participants can ‘drop in' with support for as long as they wish.
The more flexible structure allows participants to explore activities at their
own pace, making their own choices and gaining independence.

The session offers a range of stimuli (visual, auditory, tactile and vibroacoustic),
so there is something to suit everyone, whatever their interests, learning style,
needs or abilities. There are different areas - both relaxed/ chillout areas and
stimulating areas; activities which people can do by themselves, as well as
group activities.

Due to the popularity of the Sensory Drop-In, AAM has decided to extend the
times of the sessions to allow more people to access the program. From April 2011
we will be running 2 more weekly slots

Session 1: Each Friday from 1 – 2pm at Burton Stone Community Centre

Session 2: Each Friday from 2 – 3pm at Burton Stone Community Centre

Cost:  £3 per session, however places are limited so make sure you
book early to avoid disappointment!

Due to the popularity of the Tuesday afternoon Movers and Shakers session, AAM is setting up a new weekly session each Monday afternoon starting 25^th July 2010

The Monday movers and Shakers session will be structured similarly to the Tuesday one and will be open to adults with a mixed range of disabilities who like to sing, play, dance, and have fun! They will work through different themes during the session ranging from countries of the world to other musical activities e.g. singing and signing, playing instruments, dancing, as well as creating their own music.

Sessions: will start Monday 25^th July from 1.15 – 2.45pm

Venue: The Melbourne Centre, Escrick Street, off Fishergate

Cost: £3 per session

Hands and Voices Concert, 7 April @ York St johns Uni

On Wednesday 6th April 2011 at 7.30pm, York’s very own award winning Hands
& Voices choir are joining forces again with York St. John University and their
Big Band and Gospel Choir for an ‘Out of this World’ concert at the
University Chapel of St. John the Evangelist.

Hands & Voices is run by local charity Accessible Arts & Media (AAM) and they
use a unique form of singing and signing to support communication with adults with
learning difficulties, and disabilities.

In true Hands & Voices style there will be a unique blend of well-loved classics and
new works written by the choir themselves. The evening promises to be a real
‘blast-off’ of songs and music from this world and beyond. So get on our rocket ship
and get lost in space, walk on the moon, dance round the planets and experience
our final countdown. And if that wasn’t enough the performance will also feature a
devised interpretation of the universe created by members of the choir and Applied
Theatre students from the University.

Completing the line up will be another AAM group, the Sound Weavers – a small
group of musicians and composers with learning difficulties, and disabilities. Sound
Weavers will be performing a number of musical soundscapes exploring space and
other themes of galactic proportion using accessible/ assistive music technology.
So strap in and prepare to be woven with sound to another nebular!

The Out of this World concert has been sponsored by The Rotary Club of York
Vikings with additional funding and support from the City of York Council, York St
John University, York Common Good Fund, The Calmcott Trust, The Key Fund,
The Norman Collinson Charitable Trust, Donald & Patricia Shepherd Charitable
Trust, York Rose Singers, Haxby Players, York Associates, Alan Graver and Susan
Hartshorne.

So why not make a date in your diary for the 6th April for you (and your alien, of
course!) to hop aboard the Hands & Voices rocket ship.

You can also catch Hands & Voices and SoundWeavers on Saturday July 2nd, 2pm
in the Tower Gardens (by St George’s Field) as part of AAM’s Picnic in the Park.

Well Done Hands and Voices Buskathon

We at Accessible Arts and Media and all affiliated are extremely proud of the mighty Hands and Voices (singing and signing choir) for raising such a tremendous amount of money at their Christmas buskathon.

The first venue was the Fossbank Sainsburys York, where they raised an impressive 250 pounds. There was a tremendous choir turnout and an impressive display of resilience against the December cold. Our second buskathon session was held at the Coppergate shopping centre. We were delighted by the huge crowd that we attracted, and even more so by the staggering 1100 pound that was raised in under three hours!! A Hands and Voices / Accessible Arts Media busking record!

We would like to say a big thank you to the generous shoppers of York for giving so generously at such a hard time of the Year. The choir are delighted and have been given a warm dose of confidence at such an unsettling period .

Ableweb York Launch Announcement

Accessible Arts and Media has been training local adults with disabilities to design and run an information website which is now up and running.

Since launching www.ablewebyork.org in March of 2008, Accessible Arts and Media have been working hard with the Ableweb team to update content, add new features and research other services and facilities that are available in the city of York.

We are pleased to announce some new features coming soon to the site, including a search facility and additional accessibility features. By working in partnership with the City Wide Explore Media Project our Creative Media group have helped with the information films included on the site. Thanks Explore!

Melbourne Centre Announcement

Melbourne Centre Announcement

As you know, Accessible Arts & Media are moving out of the Melbourne Centre and we were hoping to move back in after the completion of the building work, next spring.

However, we are sad to say, we have decided we are not going ahead with the renovation of the Melbourne Centre after all. There are lots of reasons, but the main one is that the credit crunch has made this too difficult.

Accessible Arts and Media will not be closing; we will relocate to Burton Stone Community Centre in August. All projects will still be going ahead, however Hands & Voices, SoundWeavers and the Melbourne Film Makers will take a break from Sept – Dec 2009 and start back again in January 2010 (venue to be confirmed).

We are saddened that this may impact on our many members, user groups and the local community, but in order to continue our creative and charitable work we must focus on running and developing our award winning projects.

The City of York Council is currently working hard to find another organisation to take over the running of The Melbourne Centre, which will ensure a continuing base for community groups. Meanwhile, thank you to our many partners for your support over the last four years.

Musical Monuments at Bolton Priory

October half term sees the return of Accessible Arts & Media’s pioneering Musical Monuments project – a free music project which gets 8-12 year olds with and without disabilities working together through music.

Each Musical Monuments project focuses on a different North Yorkshire Monument, and in October 2009 Musical Monuments will be coming to Bolton Priory, in Wharfedale.

This exciting project has only been made possible through generous funding from the Big Lottery Awards for All Programme, Yorkshire and Clydeside Bank, Amicus and North Yorkshire County Council Transforming Short Breaks programme and it is a partnership project between Bolton Priory and Accessible Arts & Media.

The project will run from Monday 26^th – Friday 30^th October, 10am – 3pm each day. It is open to young people from 8 – 12 years of age who live in and around Bolton Abbey, however the age range can be more flexible for young people with disabilities. It may also be possible to offer some support or help with transport to participants with disabilities, but this is limited so please book this well in advance.

The project will culminate in a unique FREE performance of the group’s new piece at Bolton Priory on Friday 30^th October, 1.30pm, where everyone will be welcome – family, friends, visitors and the local community alike.
